Twin ovipositivity (zygosity) test

Determination of the ovipositivity of twins on the basis of similarity alone may not always be conclusive. This genetic test is used to reliably determine the ovipositivity (zygosity) of twins.

This genetic test is used to reliably determine the ovipositivity of twins.

Dyzigotic twins develop from two different eggs that are fertilized by one sperm each. Each of the twins is nourished by its own placenta before birth. In that both twins arise from a different egg and sperm, they actually resemble classic siblings. They may or may not be similar and they may or may not have the same sex. Their genetic makeup is not identical.

Monozygotic twins develop from only one egg and one sperm, but the embryo then splits into 2 embryos. Identical twins therefore share a placenta, the same sex and over 95% identical DNA.

However, a quarter of monozygotic twins split into two embryos within three days of fertilisation of the egg and each twin then has its own placenta, similar to that of identical twins. However, their genetic make-up is identical to that of twin twins.

What is the procedure after ordering the test?

In this test, we analyse DNA samples from both twins. You will take the DNA (buccal swab of cells from the inside of the cheek) yourself with a fine toothbrush, which will be sent to you by post after you have placed your order (including instructions on how to proceed). Sampling is painless, safe and quick. We always test two independent samples for maximum reliability of results (i.e. you swab twice). You will then send the collected samples back to our laboratory. You will receive your test results from us within about a week of receiving your samples.
